ESIC Sickness Benefit: Eligibility and Claim

ESIC Sickness Benefit: Contribution Conditions and Duration

Reviewed 16 October 2026. ESIC's published benefit table states that ordinary sickness benefit generally requires contributions paid for at least 78 days in the relevant contribution period. It provides 70% of average daily wages for up to 91 days in any two consecutive benefit periods, subject to certification and the governing ESIC rules. Benefit and contribution periods are not the same; do not describe the limit as 91 days in every six-month period.

Other Sickness Benefit Categories

ESIC also describes extended sickness benefit for specified long-term diseases, with a separate contributory condition and a higher rate, and enhanced sickness benefit for qualifying sterilisation procedures. Eligibility, diagnosis, duration and rate depend on the current ESIC schedule and medical certification. Do not assume that a general sickness claim automatically converts to an extended benefit.

How to Check and Apply

  1. Check the insured person's contribution record and current benefit-period dates in ESIC records.
  2. Obtain medical certification from the authorised ESIC medical provider for the condition and period claimed.
  3. Use the current claim channel and document list shown by ESIC. Older references to paper forms or portal menus may no longer match the live process.
  4. Keep the claim acknowledgement, certification and payment record. If eligibility is denied, ask ESIC for the specific contribution or medical reason.

Sickness benefit is a statutory cash benefit and is separate from an employer's paid leave policy. Check the employee's contract, applicable labour rules and ESIC entitlement separately; do not assume one automatically offsets the other.
