How to use this overtime estimate
The calculator divides your entered monthly wage base by the normal workdays and hours you enter, then applies a 2× multiplier to the overtime hours you enter. It is an arithmetic estimate, not a finding that each entered hour qualifies under the law.
- Enter the wage base that applies to the worker and the relevant rules; basic pay, gross wages and CTC are not interchangeable.
- The Codes provide for an overtime rate of at least twice the normal or ordinary rate for covered work. The applicable hours test and ordinary-rate calculation depend on the worker category and rules.
- Do not apply one quarterly cap or a monthly-wage-divided-by-26 formula to every workplace. Check current Central or Kerala State rules and sector-specific directions.
Before payroll, reconcile actual attendance, qualifying hours, the statutory wage base and the required records. The result from this tool should be checked against those facts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the overtime rate?
The labour codes provide for overtime at not less than twice the normal or ordinary rate for covered work. The statutory wage base and hours test depend on the applicable Code, rules, worker category and appropriate government. This calculator simply doubles the hourly rate derived from your entered monthly wage base and hours.
Is there a limit on overtime hours?
There is no single quarterly cap that applies to every establishment. Check the current working-hours, consent and overtime provisions for the worker category, establishment and appropriate government, including State rules or sector-specific directions.
Does overtime form part of PF wages?
No. Overtime is an excluded component under the definition of wages in the Code on Social Security, 2020. It does, however, count towards the 50% composition test, so large overtime can indirectly affect PF wages.
Is overtime included in the minimum wage?
No. Minimum wage is the rate for normal working hours. Overtime is payable in addition, at the statutory multiple.
